# Ghostty on Fedora 45

A new version of Ghostty is out: 1.4.0. Fedora 45 has also come out around the same time. I'm upgrading from Fedora 44 and Ghostty 1.3.1.

Some time ago I cloned Ghostty from source and did a source install.

git clone https://github.com/ghostty-org/ghostty

Since I already have the repo cloned, I can just get updates:

git fetch
git checkout v1.4.0

Fedora still has Zig 0.16 in the repos right now but Ghostty 1.4.0 requires Zig 0.17. I had to grab that version from the Zig website: ziglang.org/download.

I extracted the archive into ~/Applications.

tar -xf ~/Downloads/zig-x86_64-linux-0.17.1.tar.xz

You might want to add this to your $PATH so you can invoke via zig. If you plan to install Ghostty system-wide you must, additionally, either add zig to the root $PATH or use the absolute path to invoke it.

I tried building the new version but I got a compile failure:

The release notes indicate that we need a new egl library. On Fedora 45 I got this is via mesa-libEGL-devel.x86_64:

sudo dnf install mesa-libEGL-devel.x86_64

And now I can build and install:

 sudo /home/cbednarski/Applications/zig-x86_64-linux-0.17.1/zig build -p /usr -Doptimize=ReleaseFast
